Shrewsbury Family BikeFest
Shropshire County Council is getting ready to host the Shrewsbury BikeFest, as part of the national Bike Week 2007 celebrations. The BikeFest is set to take place on Saturday 9 June at Shrewsbury Sports Village from 10am until 3pm. It is just one of the events taking place across Shropshire to mark the UK’s annual celebration of cycling.
All cyclists, whether young or old, experienced or novices, are encouraged to “have fun, get fit, feel free” and the BikeFest will be offering help and inspiration. Free rickshaw rides will be one of the attractions at the event.
Rickshaw Phil, who can normally be found in the Quarry at weekends, will be taking his rickshaw to the sports village on Sundorne Road for the day.
Dr Bike will check bikes for free and there will be cycle skills sessions for families, adults and under-16s. There will be bikes for people to borrow or try out including some more unusual ones like recumbents, tandems and adult tricycles.
Families can join the “pedalling picnic” which sets off at 12pm and follows national Cycle Route 81 along cycle tracks and quiet roads to Castle Walk by the River Severn. This will also be an opportunity to enjoy the recently-resurfaced section of Route 81.
Visitors to the event will be helping the Sports Village to “cycle round the world” – over the summer all circuits of the track and miles cycled to get to the sports village will be added up and the aim is to “cycle round the world” by the end of October.
John Everall, Cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “This is a great family event and we hope that it will encourage people to get out on their bikes and explore the beautiful Shropshire countryside.”

despair for the future of the human race. ~H.G. Wells"
