people still don't know nearly enough about human induced climate change

Climate Change Cartoon Exhibition opens @ the Gateway Gallery, Shrewsbury

International and national cartoonists have contributed to a special exhibition of work on climate change. This touring exhibition is coming to the Shrewsbury and will be exhibited at the Gateway Gallery 3 until from April 19th until May 26th.

The display is being put on by the national environmental change charity, the Marches Energy Agency, as part of the Shrewsbury International Cartoon Festival.

Among the work on display:

The Guardian's Martin Rowson depicts Arnold Schwarzenegger balancing the world on his shoulders, while the presidents of Iran and the United States - Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and George Bush - strut about showing the apparent strength of nuclear power and oil;

The take on the subject of Ian Baker - one of Britain's most popular cartoonists - is the introduction at a world environment summit of the abominable slush man;

Chris Madden, whose work has been published by the Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph and the Guardian, shows executives of a refrigeration company celebrating higher sales because of global warming;

And caricaturist Steve Bright introduces Albert, a nuclear scientist, whose liking for fizzy drinks has led to an unsatisfactory social life.

The exhibition is supported by Shropshire County Council and Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council. It will be opened by Carolyn Downs, Chief Executive of Shropshire County Council at a special opening on Friday evening.

Kris McGowan, Senior Project Manager and co-ordinator of the exhibition said "We are very fortunate to have been donated these works. This exhibition covers a wide range from the absurd and whimsical to the stark and thought-provoking. While it is incumbent on us all to step up to the challenge of climate change, keeping a sense of humour is vital."

Entry to the Gateway Gallery 3 is free and the exhibition is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am until 9.00pm. The International Cartoon Festival takes place on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th and the Gallery will be open specially for this from 10 - 4.30.
